PFLAG Tucson Chapter [aka Parents of Lesbians and Gays] Archives
Collection
Parents of Gays and Lesbians in Tucson Arizona met in
the 1990s in support of their children in local high
schools who had already years before or were then
forming both student and off school clubs-groups.
At differing time periods the
PFLAG Tucson chapter of the national organization
promoted the health and well-being of gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender persons. They help through
support, education, and advocacy. The group
supported parents, families, straight/gay spouses, and
the spectrum of LGBTQ+ with support at the private
monthly meetings at various locations around the
city. It provided those who attended no matter where
they were in their lives with an opportunity for sharing
their and their childrens personal experiences and
problems safely while feeling supported.
The local chapter assisted in the education process
both for individuals and community wide with respect,
acknowledgement, and fostering LGBTQ relationships of
their children as something to be proud of, that was
healthy and like other relationships in the straight
community.
The PFLAG Tucson education activities often featured
a yearly fundraising effort with both its own and others
sponsored scholarships for LGBTQ+ local students seeking
a college, trade school, or university education and
included numerous guest speakers at middle school, high
school, college, university, and local business or
organizations.
